Dental Crowns Perth WA

Dental crowns are porcelain restorations that cover the whole tooth

At Access Dental Care in the Perth CBD, Bull Creek, and Perth East we offer dental crowns as a treatment for:

  • A tooth weakened by decay, a large filling
  • A tooth weaken after a root canal
  • A tooth that has been worn down, cracked or fractured

Dental crowns are custom-made from an impression your dentist will take of your teeth, and can be made from a variety of materials including:

  • All metal (usually gold)
  • Porcelain fused to metal (often gold or gold alloy)
  • Full ceramic (porcelain)
  • Composite (plastic with glass particles embedded)

Which material is used will depend on why you are having the crown.

Whether you choose to have a crown to improve the shape and alignment of your teeth or to strengthen your tooth, the procedure is the same. Two appointments are necessary: the first to prepare the tooth and the second to fit the crown.

The first appointment

The first appointment is when your tooth is prepared for the crown. Firstly, an aesthetic will be administered, and then an impression of your teeth (both upper and lower jaw to get an idea of your bite) is taken. Once the impression mould is completed your Access Dental Care dentist will shape the tooth ready for the crown. Now the tooth has been prepared a temporary crown will be placed while your more permanent restoration is fabricated.

The second appointment

The second appointment will take place one to two weeks. This is determined by the length of time it takes to fabricate your crown.

At your second appointment, your temporary crown will be removed and your tooth cleaned. Before the permanent dental crown is cemented into place, your Access Dental Care dentist will make sure the crown fits and feels comfortable. When you and your dentist are happy with the look and feel of the dental crown it will be bonded into place.

When you receive restorative dentistry, like dental crowns, it is important to visit your dentist for regular check-ups to ensure the continued health of the dental crown. If looked after properly a dental crown can last up to 10 years.
